He tells her that he is truly a mean person who is only happy when others are miserably. After denying the true nature of Captain Jaggery, she realizes the hard way. Charlotte is brought to trial for murder with Captain Jaggery as judge. After everything she has been through, Charlotte starts to change and eventually is known as one of the crew members. Living on this ship for months she starts to call it home and struggles to leave. Now that she has changed so much who knows if she will even be accepted back in the family. Avi is an award winner of the Newbery Medal and the Newbery Honor. His books are meant for all ages, however, this one is meant for teens. "Avi casts a sharp look at society and provides a suspenseful, adventurous sea tale" Charlotte Mecklenburg says. Also, when reading this book Avi is constantly changing the point of view Charlotte has on a character. One second she likes the captain, another she doesn't know if he can be trusted. This makes the reader constantly on the edge of their seat and surprised when another mystery has been solved. ALA booklist said that this book is "Riveting. Nonstop action on the high seas. A story hard to forget."
This book is a must read for any teenager girl who believes that guys and girls are made the same. This book in a way, empowers girls to do whatever they put their mind to. Charlotte is told many times she can't do something just because of her gender, however, she doesn't let anything get in her way of what she wants. Kirkus Reviews goes on saying that it is " A thrilling tale, tautly plotted, vividly narrated, carefully researched."
